Pricing and tax
Every product has a purchase price (what it costs you) and a selling price (what you charge), each with its own taxes. This page explains how ekPOS turns those into the figures on a sale.

The price boxes
Each price has three parts:
- The amount.
- Taxes — click the tax area and tick one or more tax rates, or leave No Tax. The tax picker opens beneath the tax area in both English and Arabic. Ticking several adds them together.
- Exclusive or Inclusive:
| Setting | Meaning | Example with VAT 14% on 100.00 |
|---|---|---|
| Exclusive (tax added on top) | The amount is before tax. | Customer pays 114.00 |
| Inclusive (tax included in price) | The amount already contains the tax. | Customer pays 100.00, of which 12.28 is VAT |
New single products and variants default to Inclusive for both purchase and selling taxes, including the controls that apply prices to all variants. You can choose Exclusive when needed.
For an exclusive price, the box shows the Final price including tax underneath.
TipShops that label shelves with the price the customer pays usually use Inclusive selling prices. Supplier invoices usually quote Exclusive prices.
Fixed-amount taxes (for example a stamp duty per unit) are added per unit on top of any percentage taxes.
Where each price is used
| Price | Used for |
|---|---|
| Selling price | The starting price when the product is added to a sale or at the POS. Price lists can replace it for particular customers, and discounts reduce it. |
| Purchase price | The starting cost when the product is added to a purchase, and the cost ekPOS uses for profit and for cost of goods sold. |
How cost changes over time
When you receive a purchase, ekPOS updates the product's purchase price to the latest landed cost: the supplier's unit price plus its share of the purchase's shipping and other charges. Your margins, the Profit & Loss report and cost of goods sold then use that newest cost. See Landed cost.
For a variant, the variant's own cost is updated.
Prices on saved sales never change
A sale keeps the prices, taxes and discounts it was made with. Changing a product's price, or a tax rate's percentage, only affects sales made afterwards.
Changing prices quickly
- From the product list: click a single product's selling price and type the new one.
- For many products: export them, change the prices in the spreadsheet, and import the file back to update them.
- For all variants of one product: Set Price for All Variants on the product form.
